Restaurant, cafe and shop interior design: a planning checklist

A commercial interior is a working machine as well as a brand statement. Get the flow, lighting and materials right and the space earns its keep every day.
- Design customer and staff flow before choosing finishes
- Use durable, easily cleaned materials in high-traffic zones
- Plan safety, services and approvals from the start
Start with the business, not the mood board
Define who your customers are, how many you serve at peak time and what the space must do. A cafe designed for quick takeaways looks very different from one meant for long conversations.
Plan the customer journey
Map how a customer arrives, waits, orders, sits, pays and leaves. The entrance, display or menu, seating and billing point should guide people naturally without crowding.
Design the back of house properly
Kitchens, storage, washing areas and staff routes are where restaurants succeed or fail. Efficient layouts, good ventilation and easy-to-clean surfaces save time and money every day.
Lighting sets the mood
Layer ambient, task and accent lighting. Warm light flatters food and faces, while brighter, focused lighting helps retail displays. Dimmers let you shift the atmosphere from day to evening.
Choose materials that last
Restaurants and shops face constant footfall, spills and cleaning. Select durable floors, stain-resistant tabletops and wall finishes that take a knock, and keep replacement parts easy to source.
Do not forget acoustics
Hard surfaces make spaces noisy. Soft furnishings, acoustic panels and ceiling treatments keep conversation comfortable.
Approvals and safety
Commercial spaces must meet fire safety, electrical and local authority requirements. Discuss these early with your designer so that they shape the design rather than derail it.
A quick checklist
- Customer flow mapped
- Kitchen and storage planned
- Lighting layers agreed
- Durable finishes selected
- Acoustics considered
- Approvals and safety checked
